Sad News: Alan Wagstaffe

Alan hasn't run AZ or CA Solo is quite a few years now, but some of you may remember him from when he ran his CM FF1600 Lola at Firebird Skidpad 4 and Sierra Vista, then his C4 Corvette and finally his B-Mod LeGrand in Sierra Vista, Tucson, and San Diego. Alan was the one who got me excited about designing and building my own BM car after I helped him with the initial sorting of his car. BTW, Alan's BM car is now in CT. After accomplishing the next major step in its design and development, the Krystiniks,Tamra and Andrew, run it at a National level. About 7 years ago now, Alan and his wife very graciously allowed us to park our motorhome on their horse property in Scottsdale. Linda was able to stay there on the days that she was too tired to drive back to Prescott after a day at the Envita clinic. Alan had an interesting 2nd career rewiring exotic vintage sports cars like Ferraris after retiring as an electrical engineering manager from Motorola. Alan was also an avid ATV enthusiast. Facebook

Thoughts on the April course and grid arrangement?

What was everyone’s thoughts on the big course and alternate grid location? I really enjoyed the big course and I liked leaving the car and gear in the same spot most of the day. Most of the comments I heard were very positive. It did require a little more coordination moving into and out of grid spots but seemed most adapted quickly. With the more open course I noticed very few if any DNFs. And while there were cone penalties, I didn’t see a slow down from a large amount being taken out. On the registration side, this was the first event in a while that sold out and had a waitlist before registration closed.

I'm not sure how you feel, but everyone I spoke with about the new layout we tried with separate grid and HUGE course really liked it and wants to continue using a setup like this. I know I enjoyed the permanent grid spot and the best surprise was being able to view the whole course from anywhere in grid. A downside may be some communication issues as it was sometimes hard to hear the PA, but I think that is something we can work on going forward. Otherwise, fantastic event...thanks to everyone that put in extra duty to pull it off!!

Here's my 4th and hopefully last run on these crappy tires, loved the course and it's challenges.

Can someone with the minor waiver knowledge remind of the rules. My daughter wants her 17 year old boyfriend to attend the autocross this weekend. He will not be driving. He does want to ride along though. What are the requirements? Thanks!

Meeting Date: 3/18/2026

Greeting and Opening (Paul Nielander)

General Club Update (Kevin Venisnik)

- Relationship with PIR is good and we will be using this facilty for the upcoming fall and spring season.

- Fall schedule is solid and negotiated with PIR. (See below)

- MCC Update not promising (See Below)

- Desire from Nissan Zconn to borrow / rent our equipment for their event.

o This would be done at their site.

o Details of logistics and next steps to be determined.

- PASR School for October – November time frame. Catered food can be available.

- SCCA was happy with our Starting Line school in February 2026.

o Our crew had some interesting timing for setup and tear down and that was greatly appreciated.

- SCCA National is potentially interested another Tour event. Still working the details.

Membership Update (Kim Kemper)

- 514 members

o 29 are not region of record

- Membership is stable and consistent since last Steering Committee.

Financial Update (Lance Hamilton)

- See the report attached for details. (See Below)

- Bank balance is almost recovered from the time when we left AMP.

Next Event #4 April 19^th, 2026

- Two lot configuration considerations. (Kim Kemper and Paul Nielander)

o Walk through the event logistics was done by Kim Kemper with particular review of the map attached below and the course design.

o Discussion was gone through about Heat and Water planning in case of a weather concern. It was agreed that we will see weather conditions and react accordingly with making water available. Michael H. will, as usual, include text in the emails about heat and hydration readiness.

Fall Schedule Update (Kevin Venisnik / Kim Kemper)

- Event number 3 would be the Firebird event on November 15th, 2026.

For Clarity:

Event Number One is 9/20 (PR)

Event Number Two is 11/1 (PR)

Event Number Three is 11/15 (Firebird)

Event Number Four is 12/5 (PR)

PASR School would be 10/31 (PR)

- For Spring 2027, we need to start looking into dates in June of 2026. Contracts by August.

Firebird Fall Event (Kenny Mitchell)

- November 15^th is the confirmed event date.

- Entrance fee is the current question. To cover the cost associated to this site rental. (To be discussed later)

- The West Skid pad and the track is the area that we will have available.

- Logistics planning for staging and paddock need to be worked out.

- Course has been approved and can be submitted for Sanction.

- Start and finish will be done differently. We will be using the ramps for the start and finish. No grid on course.

- The space between the ramps will be a course dead zone.

- Divisional Safety Steward has approved the use of the course for a points event.

- There will be a requirement for DFQ use. Safety will determine how this will work before the event communications. The 4 wheels off will apply for disqualification from event and scoring. (Kim Kemper)

- Action: Copy of the course map to Jim.

- A review of the financial case / spreadsheet was conducted to determine the cost of the event based on the number of cars and expenses that need to be covered. (To covered later)

- Hot swap for worker change to be discussed before the event. This is with an objective of addressing timing of the event.

- One toilet is included. We’re going to need to increase the number of toilets to correspond with the number of participants.

- Fire and Safety are available for 8 hours ONLY.

Update on MCC Opportunity: (Kevin Venisnik / Kim Kemper)

- Unfortunately, progress with MCC is not moving well.

- Kevin to follow up with Mike Terrey to clarify the situation.

- Nothing can be planned with this event at current.

Speaker System (Wireless and Distance) (Kenny Mitchell)

- Sweetwater Systems is the vendor that Kenny has been working with…

- Wireless cannot more than 300 feet between transmitter and speaker.

- The vendor would like to have a GPS photo of the site to help with design.

- Minimum $5000 for 2 speakers.

- This does NOT include power for the speakers. This will also have to be arranged.

- Kenny is looking for agreement to proceed to next steps. But, it was deferred for exploration of less expensive options.

- Low Power FM transmitter. The vendor does not recommend the use of this any longer. This is unfortunately impacted by other interferences near PR.

- Kim Kemper suggested we get through the 2 lot April event to better understand logistics.

- Kenny will in the interim look into boosting the existing FM transmitter for car radio assistance.

o After the meeting a low cost alternative transmitter was found.

o Board has approved the purchase of this transmitter to be used at upcoming events.

Course Blowing Discussion / Update (Bruce Hanson)

- Bruce covered the blowing of the event. Logistics and results.

- The problem is storing the device and gasoline in the POD.

- A unit is $2500 to purchase.

- Bruce suggests that renting is a better course of action. So, for each event, we would simply add the $45 expense for the event.

- The blowing took Bruce 1 hour to blow the course.

- Bruce has looked into electric blowers. Husqvarna 880 CFM has a blower that is 200 mph. This unit cost ~$379 each. Adding a bigger battery for $209 more. He’s suggesting one for each workstation. Approximately $3000 for all proposed workstations.

o Jim added that having smaller blowers across would be more practical.

o Board passed purchase one of the Husqvarna blowers as a test.

Conclusion / Next Meeting (Paul Nielander)

May 21^st will be the next Steering Committee meeting.

Editing a MSR Entry

Guessing I might not be the only one to need to know this, so would you please share what the proper procedure is to go back in after registering to edit an existing entry? Like wrong car, worker position request, Run Group, etc?

I'd just try it myself, but I'd rather not guess and perhaps mess something up.

Step by step would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Autocrossing Memories from Last Century :-)

Showing here is an Event Flyer we used to mail and post around town (this was around 1980) to try to drum up more entries. Of course there were no computers, so this was done by typewriter, rub-ons, and cut and paste. We used the good old US Post Office for mailing, and the phone number to answer any questions. Hand delivered to many auto parts places and garages for posting.

In those days trophies were awarded after every event, and sometimes even "Dash Plaques" too. Results were mailed out within a week or two.The complete SCCA Solo Rule book was about 30-40 pages long and very small. We typically had around 50-70 entries. Lots of fun was had by all.

Boy have the times changed, huh?

There was some discussion about a March Event at MCC. It doesn’t show up in the list of upcoming events. Was that idea scrapped?

PASR #3 Results Correction

My entry in the event Sunday changed at the last minute after my Mercedes ran over a long 5mm bolt at the entrance to PR. I ran Kyrsta Ramos’ 2003 VW Beetle Turbo-S in HS. The timing sheet showed this correction, but that may have been missed.

Also thanks to Don Sattler for giving me a little screw-in tire repair plug to get the Mercedes back home. Amazing enough that fix worked better than expected and the tire has lost no air 24 hours later.

Well, got the Corrado cooling system all upgraded and repaired, but now it runs funny. Must have missed a connector or something. Or just something unrelated went south at the same time.

Anyway, looking for something to drive tomorrow in HS. Krysta Ramos might be a possibility, but I don’t know how to contact her.

Speedwaiver For Starting Line School

The other night on the the Team Zoom for the Starting Line School, the subject of Speedwaivers came up in discussion and it was learned that there was no speedwaiver for the Starting Line School to present to the Waiver Station Saturday morning thus, a paper SCCA waiver must be signed. If the member completed the Speedwaiver for the PASR Event #3, wouldn't that Speedwaiver be acceptable at the Waiver Station Saturday morning?

My SCCA Speedwaiver shows it is valid from Feb. 16 through the 22nd and I will be attending a SCCA event this coming Saturday which is the 21st.

Data and video - tell us about your setup for autocross

Let's talk data logging and video setups!

I want to start using data and video to analyze my runs and get faster... and because I like to geek out with data. I've done a fair bit of research but nothing I'm finding seems to be really great for point-to-point autocross. I want to see time split deltas between runs as well as analyzing fully post-event. Also want to tap into the CAN to get more telemetry like throttle and brake position, etc. For cameras, I'm eyeing GoPro Hero 12 to start, on a chin mount because I want to see my hands and where I'm looking (look ahead!). Eventually I'll want to outside mount to see how tight to cones I am getting.

I'm just playing around with the RaceChrono app and I find it frustrating for autocross... clearly it's designed for track laps. Looking at Racebox and the AimSolo2 and willing to spend money if it works well. Harry's? SoloStorm?

So, tell me about your data logging and video setups for autocross. I see a lot of you with cameras, and tablets... What do you use, do you like it, what have you tried, etc. Any info or suggestions you want to share would be great.

Additional Volunteers Desired for Saturday February 21 Starting Line School

Ever considered getting more involved with the club? If so we could use some additional volunteers to help out at the Starting Line School on Saturday February 21st. This would include help with equipment setup, course setup, coverage at waiver and another "Student Success Facilitator" (as the SCCA has so eloquently named the role 😄).

For the student success facilitator I think it's just someone to help keep the event flowing smoothly but this is how the SCCA has explained the role:
Offers run/work reminders & assists in escorting students from one element to the next

If anyone is interest in helping out and can come out Saturday the 21st for some or all of the day please let me know. You can post here, message me via the forum or email me at kvenisn@msn.com. The success of this club/region is all thanks to the volunteers that help put on the events and we can always use more people willing to pitch in. I can't count all the times one someone in the core group has come out to an event they are not running in or arranged their non-SCCA life around an event just because they wanted to make sure things were covered.
