  1. My son and I had a great time on Sunday being back at the track, we are not used to this heat yet (WA is a little on the cooler side) but we managed to stick it out until the end of the day. This was my first time shooting autocross and I must admit I'm not used to all those cones! I agreed to give one free image to competitors so if you can give me your car details etc I will get a free image to you. The rest are up on my site and are available to purchase if you so wish. I hope to be back out again for the next round..fingers crossed. https://veitchcreative.smugmug.com/Car-Racing/SCCA-Solo/ I can also produce 19"x13" high quality prints if anyone is interested....Thanks!!

  4. Everybody needs to chill......... "In the Old Days", after an event, the results person had to -- by hand -- compile the results. When that was done, then the results had to be taken to a copy place to be printed. When that was done, we had a "results party" of multiple volunteers to collate, address (by hand again), stamp and mail the results. We were lucky to have the results by the end of two weeks. You all are just too spoiled. Sharon Roberts

  7. So, you may be asking yourself, what does it look like to be right there on a really good run just to through it away at the end? Well, glad you asked! Here is what it looks like side by side the top PAX of the day. The sound is from the right window.

  8. Hey Everyone! If you haven't noticed yet, the main page for azsolo.com has been updated! Hop on over and check it out at https://www.azsolo.com/ (yes it is running over https finally! So make sure to update your bookmarks, it'll still work on the http version of the site, but the https site is the better one to use) Thanks to Jason Bucki, Morgan Lee, and Edmundo Cruz for helping get this over the line. We still have a few things planned for it, so stay tuned for updates! And if you were curious about the old site for historical purposes, we are working on getting it up and running on a different address so you look up all the old content that was on it.

  9. Well that was a day... Interesting course, fast and fun but very difficult sight lines in some spots. Here is my 46.223 run. After looking at Mike's Mat's and my Solostorm logs we've discovered I'm bad fast turning left and they are both bad fast turning right... We all probably had 44s available if we would have just driven correctly... Oh well, we'll get better next time. Congrats to Mike on the CAM T win. Nice driving...

  10. Thanks to all for the constructive discussion. Agree with intentional baby steps back to normal, with the possibility to end up with improvements. We are lucky that our hobby is an outdoor activity which is inherently less risky than other activities.

  11. I believe if everyone keeps patient and plays their part in protecting others by wearing a mask we might be back to a more normal by September. The issue is that a lot of the population is just tired of having to do something that they don’t want to do. So if we do our part, that is a small piece of the larger puzzle that isn’t causing a potential issue. Please keep in mind that the move to “back to normal” won’t be everything all at once. It will be more structured, like being allowed to bring guests, but only if they live with you and everyone still needs to wear a mask. This would be regardless if you have been vaccinated, because you can still transmit a virus. Every virus transmission also accelerates the chance of mutation of that virus. So, if there are enough mutations of the virus, then the vaccination is no longer effective, then everything starts over. The steering committee as well as everyone else wants things to get back to normal with guests and TO’s. But if we lifted the masks and went full steam ahead and we had a member die, I personally would not be okay with that. I’ve had family member’s hospitalized and my wife had two coworkers die from this virus, so please be patient and we will get through this together.

  12. I really enjoy threads like this, especially with the videos showing hand position relative to the course. The views mounted centrally I find most instructive. Very useful. Also have a favor/suggestion to ask. I (and probably others) don’t know many of your Forum names or nicknames. I likely know you and/or your cars when I see you, but not here. Half of these videos I don’t know who you are or even what you’re driving. Suggesting it would be more personable and “community-like” if everyone posted a signature line, or your name as your Forum name. We’d all get to know each other better, I think. Thanks for considering it.😉

  13. As many of you are probably aware the SC was in the midst of some recent changes with Dave Hurt stepping down from the Director role, Derek Bellamy transitioning from the Treasurer role and Shawn Warner resigning as Chief of Waiver. I’d like to thank not just these 3 but all the members of the SC (past and present) for all their contributions to the club. It takes these people and their assistants putting in a lot of hours, before, during and after our events to make our club and events successful. Efforts are underway to update and modernize our web page and this information and other important info will be included in that update but in the meantime I am please to announce the 2021 Steering Committee: Kevin Venisnik - Director Kim Kemper - Assistant Director Steve Eymann - Treasurer Faith Hare - Chief of Waiver Matt Underhill - Worker Chief Dave Hurt - Goody Store Jason Bucki - Chief of Timing & Scoring Chris Steele - Chief of Tech Kim Kemper - Chief SSS Brian Miller - Site Liaison Chris Groppi - Banquet/Trophy Josh Johnston - Chief Registrar Lance Hamilton - Assistant Registrar Jon Herold - Chief Instructor Tim Bergstrom - Chief of Equipment Nick Sloan - Chief of Course

  19. So there are a few tips that I have heard that seem to help me the most. Slow in, fast out. This is from a podcast from http://autocrosstalk.com/ with Brian, mostly. You can loose a lot more time overdriving into a corner than you can ever gain back. You want to be able to play with the gas by the "apex" of the corner. This will also help establish the line that you wanted to take for the course as well rather than saying oh crap and essentially leaving a section un-tested. Distance is usually your enemy. Patience can be a useful ally. This goes with cutting distance. If your on the gas too hard too soon, you get pushed out wide and off line for the next element. Patience does not mean coast!! If you are using data logging, the G dot should never hang out in the middle. Every corner should feel just a little sketchy (for now). I don't know if this is true for Brian, maybe he will chime in, but I think there should always be just a little bit of balancing the car with every corner. Your not really catching the car, its just before that. So in Brian's video around 22 seconds in and in my video around 18 seconds in are good examples, a little bit of counter steering but that's it. In my video around 22 seconds in that was a little too much power, so there was a lift. Mentally review early and often. Run the course in your head while heading over to do another course walk. Run the course in your head before each run. Run/review the course in your head right after your run. Take notes if you need to. Where were you looking? Did you get behind instead of looking ahead? Were you ever coasting, or did it ever feel like just canyon driving? Did you almost spin anywhere? Where were the tires just starting to talk a little? This takes time to learn!! Good practice will lead to this becoming easier. For example, immediately after the run posted, I knew that I added too much distance just before the finish.

  20. So, this is a good conversation to have and I've been thinking about it as well. To be technical, Sean's F150 shouldn't be in CAM T either. It's probably my fault as I told him to register in CAM T without really thinking about it, as it just looks like a CAM T build to me. Personally I love having all these old builds in CAM T and yes, we are all pretty competitive...that's what makes it so much fun. I also understand if others in the class do not want to race against the technically non-CAM T cars. If anyone does object, please speak up and we'll get everyone classed appropriately. To me, the beauty of the CAM classes is we really don't worry about this kind of stuff because for the most part, most of us aren't supposed to be here anyway. 🤣

  30. Registration for the AZ Solo Autocross Spring 2021 Series Event 3 March 13-14, 2021 opens at 8 pm this Friday evening. This will be a bit different than our normal events in that it is a 2 day event. You can register for one day or both, it's not required to do both. The first day, March 13th, will be a test and tune event. We're capping this at 60 entries total, 2 run groups of 30 cars. You'll get a chance to drive in the morning and in the afternoon. The cost will be $55, which includes lunch. Lunch is a hot dog, chips, and a drink. Expect lots of run! The second day, March 14th, will be the 3rd event of our Spring series. For registration, there is only a single event in Motorsportsreg for both days, and there will be options for each day. Select the days you'd like to attend, and that's all there is to it! If you need a weekend membership, you'll only have to pay for that once for the entire weekend. Please bring a signed copy of the AMP waiver linked below for each day. http://msreg.com/AZSpring3 As similar to our last several events, the same covid restrictions will be in place. Masks will be required, except while driving. If you don't bring a mask, you won't be able to participate. Only pre-registered drivers will be allowed on site. This means no spectators or guests! There will be no onsite registration for this event. A and B groups will run in the morning, C and D will run in the afternoon. If you are in C or D group, you can not show up on site till noon. You will be turned away if you show up before then. Gate open at 630 am for morning run groups. We will not be providing loaner helmets, you must bring your own Snell approved helmet with a 2005 or newer rating. Water will not be provided on site, so please plan accordingly to bring your own. There will be no food vendors on site, so please plan accordingly Special processes will be in place for waiver. Check your Motorsportsreg event receipt for additional instructions. If your car does not have a sound sticker already, you MUST register in either A or B group, there will be no sound tests in the afternoon. Instructors will not be available at this event. Hope to see everyone there! March 2021 AMP Waiver Please download, print sign and bring to event. You will need a copy for each day to present at gate. 32. I know I always say I love the course design, but this time I REALLY loved the course design. Great job creating a really well flowing course Nick. The huge showcase sweeper was a ton o fun once I realized just how much grip there was all the way around. Still working my way through some suspension and tire tuning issues and getting used to some changes made, but it's getting better, much better. Hope to see other videos posted to see where I left time on the table, I'm sure there are places, but I'm pretty happy with this 48.060.

I just would like the capacity restriction lifted so if I decide to run in the afternoon session, I can arrive anytime before noon and if I elect to run in the morning that I don't have to leave by noon so I can hang and watch the afternoon cars run, and that I be able to bring a friend/wife to watch.

  43. So we aren't going to be running a driver's school this year. Instead, it will be a test and tune day. Well be making some announcements about it soon, and if they relax restrictions, we should have some instructors annular that day if you'd like some help. But that one is a bit out of our hands at this point...

  44. This seems like a positive offer of help and a step in our quest to return to “normalcy”. If there is paperwork available that recognizes our events are within safe limits, who wouldn’t favor doing so? Let’s see what’s possible. By the way, seems like Dave (again) is taking on way too much himself, with all the new challenges we’re experiencing. MSR should have a dedicated person to manage and monitor, not the Director. Someone with prior experience would be preferred. Anyone willing and able?

  45. Some school districts will allow fans at football games. For instance: Chandler High will operate at 25% capacity for spectators to begin the season, CHS Athletics tweeted. Same with Hamilton, which had almost all of its tickets sold out for Friday's home opener against Peoria Centennial on Monday. Some (but not all) have a similar statement. Phoenix International Raceway will allow 8400 people at the November 6th event. Clearly there is a way to hold normal events. It looks like there are specific steps that must be taken to exceed the 50 person limit. It seems fairly straightly forward to me. If someone on the steering committee wants to work on it, great. If not, I will volunteer to get the appropriate paperwork. All I ask is a commitment that if I succeed, the steering committee will follow thru.

  49. OK, I called the Arizona Covid-19 helpline....1-844-542-8201.....and had an extended conversation with one of their specialists. I described our autocross activity with her in great detail, and mentioned the space we occupy, a number of acres. I shared that we typically had around 150 attendees within that space. She was attentive, and looked through lots of comparable guidelines, like hiking, and especially youth sports. See link. This was from the Governors current website. https://azgovernor.gov/sites/default/files/guidance_for_organized_youth_events_0_0.pdf In her view, given the space involved, we would be within compliance guidelines as long as social distancing and all the other preventive measures were followed. She saw no problem with numbers greater than 50. So, I agree with Steve that the 50 person limit does not apply to our outdoor activity at this time. Social distancing and masks are a must. Comments?
