Site exploration?

We tried to watch the event today and we’re turned away due to capacity limit.  Have you considered using the newly built facility at Attesa near Casa Grande.  They have an area that can be used for autocross.

My understanding is Attesa is a private motor  club with a (from their website)

$25,000

initiation fee

+$400/month

as the price of joining their club. If there are any PASR members who are also Attesa members please let Brian Miller know so a possible approach could be discussed.

Ken, thanks for clarifying the Tucson site. I was told otherwise. But what the heck, wouldn’t hurt to explore any possible options.

We’ve used Tempe Diablo Stadium before, and there are more stadiums these days.😎 Anyone know anyone?😉

I spoke with Attesa further.  A club like this one can rent the facility without membership.  I didn’t ask for pricing but might be an option.

After further conversation with them and to close out the Attesa discussion, at least for now, their fees are more than 7 times what our current facility charges us

This past weekend, the Porsche Club had an Autocross in Prescott Valley, AZ. Site management was approached many years ago and was not receptive. Now Finally Toyota Center is under new management and allowed the Porsche guys to run an Autocross.

Would be a great place for summer events. I stopped over to check everything out, and was told Phoenix group was providing the timing. Did not recognize anyone at the timing table, but event had maybe 40 cars. Sea of cones, and had the 150k cars navigating 10mph corners. Looked painful.

Possible summer event site.

I was the timing guy all day for the event. Kim K. and I were assisting the Porsche Club Region for that Area with their first autocross event. Their event had 36 drivers.

There were a lot of light standards throughout the parking lot.  The event site could have potential but, paddock and grid space could be very challenging and a maximum attendance limit may have to be instituted to make the event operations manageable. The drivers ran in both the morning and afternoon sessions. Maybe a limit if 80 driver's would be the maximum number.

I did not drive in the event because I drove my Truck towing the trailer full of equipment to facilitate the event. Kim drove in the event and he would be a better source to provide an opinion on if the site would be a viable event site insofar as designing a course with the light poles. However, there still isn't sufficient space for a paddock for members towing a trailer let alone sufficient space for a grid.

What Ken said. Surface had average grip level. The course design had multiple areas that were 25 feet from the light poles. Parking was very tight, grid was a bit of a challenge, esp with how the club handled novices. I don’t think the site could support more than 50 drivers. Overall a C- to D+ experience.

Just looking on Google maps.  If you look at the Desert Diamond Casino, directly to the East is a large parking lot.  It is identified as World of Illumination and appears to be used during Xmas as a light show drive through.  It looks large and open, there are light posts but appear to be well spaced.  I will try and get by to take a look, have only seen it on Google maps.  wp

Seems we may have an alternative at Firebird Motorsports Park (formerly Wild Horse Pass). They're returning to their old name and bringing in new management with motorsports experience to breathe new life into the facility! Not sure if the I-10 development has stalled or what, but the official ADOT page for it hasn't been updated since September 2022, so it may have collapsed. For now, seems Firebird is back:

Bucking the national trend of closing tracks near large metro areas this is fantastic news. Let's hope Radford does a thorough restoration of the facility as it's getting a bit "long in the tooth". Maybe then a few SCCA Auto X dates in addition to AMP would be fun. No sound limits or attendance restrictions.

Yes to no attendance restrictions, but you do know that nearby will be a golf course, condos, and luxurious hotel accommodations. So, pretty sure there will be at least the same noise restrictions. Maybe lower.

Also, when we used to run there (for many, many years) prices crept up and up, and then for a while we even had to have an ambulance onsite. Finally, their pricing went really nuts.

Definitely worth approaching the new management, and seeing what their thinking is. Would be wise to promote the driver training and safety aspect of what our sport offers to average drivers, and especially maybe a Teen Driving School.

Fingers crossed.
