    Thanks Austin...

    Right now the event is sold out for driver entries as well as invited guests.  We are limited on how many people we can have on site at any one time and are at the limit now, so unfortunately even though we'd love to have the extra help...we don't have room at the moment.

    Becoming a regular tech worker doesn't take much more than just a commitment to be onsite at 6 am on race day and spend the setup time checking driver's cars for tech.  If you have any mechanical skills at all and a willingness to pitch in, you have what it takes.

    If there are several cancels before Sept 17, I'll try to get you on the invited guest list...and let you know.  Maybe send registration an email with your request so we can contact you directly if so.   phoenixazsolo@gmail.com

    Early Registration opens Wednesday at 8 pm

    I disable the edit function as I start to assign work assignments because if the driver goes back in to edit registration after I edit them, the whole entry will revert back to the original entry...causing me grief, frustration and errors. 

    Right now you are driving F and working E in Time Onlys

    Just drop the registrar a note of what you want to change and I'll make it happen.

    Early Registration opens Wednesday at 8 pm

    Hello All,

    Early registration for PASR members only to the Phoenix AZ Solo Region Fall 2022 Event 1 on Sept 17 at Arizona Motorsports Park opens this Wednesday August 31 at 8 PM MST. 

    At 8 PM Friday Sept 2, I'll remove the restriction for PASR members only and everyone else can then register.

    What this means is everyone will be able to see registration once it opens on Wednesday, but those that have not chosen PASR as their Region of Choice will not be able to complete their registration until Friday at 8 pm.  There is still time to contact the SCCA at 800-770-2055 and make the Phoenix AZ Solo Region your Region of Choice if you’d like to take advantage of early registration.  You must let me know if you do this so I can add your name to the list manually. 

    Below is what will be New and Different while registering for this event:

    (1)  You will first see an option asking if your car has a sound sticker on it or not that you will have to choose.  If you do not have a sound sticker, Please choose Run groups B or D and we'll send you through a sound check at 8:00 AM after tech closes and before the driver's meeting (assuming the road course is not rented out between now and then).  Tech can also provide provisional sound approval at their discretion.   

    (2) We are going back to a full day schedule for the Fall Series.  This means drivers will have 4 run groups to choose from (A, B, C and D) for your competition runs and you will be assigned a work assignment in the appropriate group based on the run group you choose.  A and C work for each other and B and D work for each other.

    (3) You will also see an option for Time only runs for an additional $15.00.  If you chose this, you’ll see the option to choose run Groups E or F and you will be assigned another work assignment in the opposing run group. E and F work for each other. 

    (4) Regarding Invited guests, the procedure we’ve used in the past will still apply, each driver can invite up to 2 invited guests to attend the event with a max of 50 total.  Once 50 guests have been invited you will not see this option any longer.  The driver will still be required to make sure their guest completes and brings to the waiver station their Speedwaiver needed for entry onto the site.  You also must put your guest’s name in the Additional Comments box on the entry, if you do not put their names in the box it will not let you complete your registration. 

    (5) If you have a co-driver driving your car in the same run group as you, select their name from the Co-Driver drop down box and also please put their name in the comment box below the option.  This makes sure that registration spaces the drivers out far enough apart in grid.

    Lastly, Pat the BBQ guy will be on-site from 11-1 serving lunch at the driver’s expense.  $10 for bbq sandwich, chips and drink.

    New Format for Fall Series

    Hello All,

    Hope the summer treated everyone well…  Who is ready to get back to racing?

    I’m sending this email a bit earlier than usual because I wanted to give everyone plenty of notice of the changes in the way our Phoenix AZ Solo Region events will be run this fall series.  We are going back to the full day event format we ran for years before the current split day format. 

    What this means is every driver will need to be onsite, through Waivers, check in at Registration, through Tech (if no 2022 annual tech sticker), and present at the driver’s meeting before the start of Group A runs.  There will be no later Check in or Tech available once Group A starts.

    There will still be 4 normal timed run Groups A, B, C, and D and there will also be two extras optional “Time Only” ("TO") run Groups E and F, each group will be capped at 35 drivers.  The TO groups will cost an extra $15 per entry and you will be required to work one group to run the other (E works for F, F works for E). 

    Registering for the TO runs not only gets the driver extra runs, but it also affords the time to let someone else drive your car, you hop in someone else’s car, have an instructor ride with you, etc…all in the name of helping everyone get better at autocross (and have more fun). TOs do not count toward your competition time for the day and as there may be reduced staffing in timing and observers during TOs, those times may or may not be reported in our final results.

    The Run\Work groups will be:  

    Run Group A will work Group C

    Run Group B will work Group D

    Run Group C will work Group A

    Run Group D will work Group B

    Run Group E will work Group F

    Run Group F will work Group E

    The day’s schedule will look like this:

    6:00 am Gates open only for Setup, Waiver, SSS, Etc.

    6:30 am Gates Open for drivers and guests

    6:30 am Registration opens

    6:30 am Tech opens

    7:00 am Course open for walking 

    7:30 am Novice Course Walk

    7:35 am Registration and Tech close

    7:45 am Course closed for walking 

    7:55 am Driver's Meeting 

    8:15 am First car off

    Estimated 4 runs per group:

    08:15 Group A start

    09:20 Group A end

    09:35 Group B start

    10:40 Group B end

    10:55 Group C start

    12:00 Group C end

    12:15 Group D start

    13:20 Group D End

    TOs Groups:

    13:35 Group E Start

    14:40 Group E End

    14:55 Group F start

    16:00 Group F end

    As you can see, for those that prefer to only be onsite for a half day…you can sign up to run Group A\Work Group C or Work A\Run C and be all done by noon. 

    We will allow drivers to invite guests (capped at 50 total) and the driver will be responsible for getting the speedwaiver links to their invited guests. 

    The first event with this new format is on Sat Sept 17.  Early Registration for Phoenix AZ Solo Region members will open on Wednesday August 31 at 8:00 pm, registration for everyone else will open Friday Sept 2 at 8 pm.

    If you have any questions about this event, please reply and ask ahead of time.  We are excited for those of you that are new and have never participated in a full day event before to see how much fun this can be.  Having a run group off between driving and working to get your car ready, socialize, eat lunch, bench race, or just take a nap is great and having the ability to get extra instruction, swap keys, swap drivers and just get more runs in at the end of the day is just an added bonus. We are exploring having a lunch vendor on site, more details to follow. 

    I’ll send another reminder out before registration opens, hopefully this gives everyone a good idea of what to expect though.

    Thanks everyone.  This was a touchy one and I was hoping to find a service writer that I could be honest with and that would understand and still treat me right.  

    Ultimately though, I just decided to go another route as it seems even the dealer "fix" if I got them to do it wouldn't be any better than what I'm dealing with now...so I'm just gonna send it and see how it goes.  😄

    Loved the course this event!  Any course where neither the fat high HP cars nor the nimble low HP cars are punished and both are allowed to shine at what they do best is awesome!

     

    Here was my fastest raw, a 45.883 +1, but I tickled a cone at the start.  Fastest clean was a 46.201.

     

    The new 3 link setup LOVED the high speed sweepers!!

    PASR Steering Committee Meeting Minutes from 3/31/2022

    As a steering committee member, I voted for the change to the full day format for the Fall series...  Keep in mind the Steering Committee chose to use the Fall series as a test and can decide to go back to a split day format later if needed.

    While I enjoy the split day format a lot, there are some things we as racers miss out on by using it.  First and foremost is the comradery and socialization that a full day format allows.  In the split day format, for the most part, entrants are either working or driving a heat, there is almost no time to just hang out and visit with friends, learn about driving techniques, car adjustments or just enjoy being with others with like interests.  With a full day format, and entrant has an open heat between their run and work assignment plus you can hang out before or after your run groups and hang out there as well. 

    Skill improvement of new drivers also is lacking with a split day format.  Every time I hit a wall and can't seem to get any better as a driver, my first go to is to put a driver of higher caliber in my car so that I can learn from them how to be better.  There are many National Championship caliber drivers in our Region that are always happy to help newer drivers improve, but the split day format does not allow that to happen.  With the Time Only option, one can chose to stay a bit longer and make practice runs in an extended format, make adjustments to one's car and have an experienced driver get in their car and show them how to improve.  This is by far one of the best ways to learn how to be a better autocrosser and our current format doesn't allow it.

    With a full day format, an entrant can still volunteer for a Setup work assignment, chose group A to run in and be off site well before lunch.  So if the shorter day at the track option is what you prefer, you still have that option.

    As far as the running of an event, what some may not realize is the split day format takes twice as much work in several instances to make the day happen.  There are two sets of Waivers, Registration, Tech, and Driver's meetings that have to take place.  A lot of that double workload is currently being done by volunteers taking on extra work assignments each event. 

    How many of you that may be opposed to switching to a full day format are willing to volunteer to work double shifts just to be able to get a few more runs in a shorter day of racing?  You can reach Registration at PhoenixAZSolo@gmail.com to volunteer to do so.  The upcoming April event is a perfect example because a lot of our regular double dippers are going to miss this event because they are out of town at a National event and we are looking for the extra help needed to put a smooth running event on.

    Registration Date for April 23 Event

    The steering committee is meeting this Thursday and we plan to discuss this then.  I believe the preference is to open registration a couple days early for Phoenix AZ Solo Region members only but will confirm a bit later.

    This driver just couldn't pull his head out and put together a decent run yesterday.  The punitive elements directly after the sharp turns just didn't fit my car or driving style I guess.  Still had a great time and CAM-T had an epic battle with the top 4 spots separated by about 4 tenths of a second.

    My camera didn't record my 50.486 run but here's my 50.7xx last run. 

     

    Best part was, 2nd event in a row the car drove back home under it's own power!!

    Test and Tune Run Group and Work Assignments

    Hello All,

    Tomorrow is our Test N Tune event which will be run a bit differently than a normal points event.  I'll note the main changes here with the idea that things move quickly and smoothly in the morning which will help all of us get more runs in which is what we all want.

    First off, you will all have assigned grid spots which you will leave your car in all day.  When you get onsite go straight to and park in your grid spot, then go to registration to get your window sticker and wrist band.  Then prepare your car to be teched if you do not have annual tech.  Tech will inspect your car in your grid spot.  TNT Grid Map - Revised.pdf

    Second, know your work assignment and please check in for your work assignment as early as you can and hustle to it 10 minutes before that run group starts.  The quicker we get the worker changeover done between run groups, the more runs we'll get in.  Stephen King will be handling worker check ins for each run group, morning and afternoon.

    Your Red driver wristband you get at Registration is your ticket for your lunch.

    We plan to stick to this schedule tightly, please be prepared and help us make this event run smoothly.

    Here is my 4th and fastest run, a 40.381.  Data from that and my fifth run showed the car had at least a low 39 in it if it just had a decent driver.

    Loved the course and loved even more that I was able to complete all laps and drive my car back home again in one piece again finally.

    Technical inspection question

    Tech inspection for autocross is mostly safety related.  Battery tied down tight, all lugnuts present, no major fluid leaks, tires good, no cords showing, brake pedal pressure, throttle return spring, and then things like driver's floormat removed, all loose items inside the car removed, etc.  Since you mention muscle car, I'll also bring up sound...the car needs to be below 96db at 50' at wide open throttle.  You can reach out to me at LSVLance@gmail.com if you have further questions, happy to help out more if I can.

    Loved the course today, shook things up by giving the small cars lots of slaloms without being punitive to the big cars much.

     

    First 2 runs in Barney looked promising, then the clutch crapped out.  Thanks to Mike for letting me jump in his car to finish my runs.

     

    Here was my 2nd run ( 49.1xx) on the new 3 link.

     

    I don't think the clutch is a big deal to fix parts wise, but the trans will have to come out to diagnose for sure.
